The 9th Annual Harwich Headhunt Striper Tournament is in the books. There were a few times when we didn’t think we would make it, or that our preparations would end up in the Harwich police blog, but we had another great tourney with a ton of people to thank.
Most importantly, congrats to the champion team of Red Nun, who weighed in a great fish of 35.8 lbs they caught on topwater east of Chatham. Rumor has it they also launched a few water balloons at another tourney boat which is exactly the type of behavior we encourage with this tourney. For the first year ever we separated out a non-charter category, and the Red Nun team won both overall Champion and non-Charter Champion, and this was the first year we did not have a charter boat finish in the top 3.
Coming in second we had team Bushwacker with an impressive 31.9 lb fish, followed by Brendi Ellen with a 28.0 lber. There were a number of other boats who came close, including long time tourney veterans on the Charlotte E. from Plymouth who came in 4th and Monomoy Shootout director on team Wasted
Seaman who came in 5th.
We also had a number of new boats this year, and some great people we hope are back next year. We’ll put more up later, but this tourney has always been about the community and making it a low key, trash talking, fun day. We now have tourney characters from Mike O’Brien, to Harry Corduroy, to the Sportsbag, to Team Jailbreak in it’s entirety to Andrew Wade, to Ed Davidson and Don, to many more who really make this worth putting it on. There were more people this year and please send your contact info in so we make sure we have it moving forward.
Overall, the tourney came off without a hitch and a big thank you to Land Ho and our sponsors. The
tourney venue was great, with Dylan and Chris being unbelievable in their help. To Mike McAskill of Goose
Hummock who donated the Quantum reels that made
the prize packages unbelievable, to Heather Jackson of Hammerhead Creatives who donated 200 free cozies, to Jean Burke who donated a custom painting of the winning boat and Sunrise Bait & Tackle who are long time supporters and contributed another great prize package. All the sponsors were great, and thank you again.
The fishing wasn’t too shabby either. Team Jackal, 0-9 in the tournament at this point, had a great day, and the top water action east of Chatham was a blast, we were using Dave Tria’s homemade lures that we (or he/Ben) crushed the stripers on as we chased them around and had a blast. It was great to see other boats out there, talk some trash, and catch fish.
As always, we’re open to any/all feedback to make this better every year. We heard some great feedback on the prizes, and t-shirts this year and will try to incorporate changes. We never make any real money on this, and that’s not the point. This year, we are actually going to lose a bunch based on getting too many t-shirts (buy more!!) but we know the risks going in and will figure something out.
We will try to post some more pictures and content from the day, and please send in any pictures, stories, etc. that you have. If nothing else, thank you again for participating and hope to see you at the Monomoy Shootout July 28th– another great local tourney.
